This thesis investigates the influence of a study abroad period on the perceptions towards the host country. As more and more international students enroll at Chinese higher education institutions every year it is important to examine what is their perception of the host country and what are the factors that influence it.According to existing literature perception is inherently culture-bound therefore the scope of this study is limited to exchange students from Hungary.A questionnaire was circulated,as well as semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 participants in order to find out what is their perception towards Chinese cultural and political values. The analysis shows that their overall opinion of China is significantly higher than the general public's and their perception was positively influenced by their study abroad period. The thesis argues that educational exchange and studies conducted at a higher educational institution induces the adoption of more favorable perceptions towards China, the host country.
