| The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism is one of the representative successful practices of China's neighborhood diplomacy,where China and Thailand have played a leading and promoting role.With China as the leading state and Thailand member state,they have many similarities and differences in the participation in LMC.By comparing the participation of China and Thailand in this mechanism,this paper finds that there are several characteristics of their cooperation.Firstly,the cooperation covers different levels and its content varies.Secondly,the cooperation moves fast but is not highly institutionalized.Thirdly,the cooperation is concentrated in low politics.Lastly,Thailand plays a relatively passive role.The differences between the two parties focus on the management of the Mekong River's water resources,the direction of the Indo-China Peninsula Economic Corridor to be constructed and the utilization of the Mekong river.Comparing with the other side,they both have comparative advantages and shortcomings in LMC.Given all points stated above,China should fully cater for the host country,strengthen institutional construction of LMC and work more with the existing regional cooperation mechanisms.Also,China should diversify the financing channels of LMC and tone the international competition with other countries down to better promote the LMC and the “Belt and Road” initiative. |
