An Analysis Of The "Thucydides Trap" In Sino-American Relations

China and the United States are the world's largest two economies.In the era of globalization,China-U.S.relations will not only affect the two countries,but also spill over to the whole world.Forty years after the establishment of diplomatic ties,China and the United States have maintained a relatively stable state of both competition and cooperation.However,since the Trump administration took office in 2017,the bilateral relations have undergone a major transformation by positioning China as a strategic competitor through a series of strategy reports and launching a trade war with China.The economic and trade friction between China and the United States rapidly expanded to all areas,and the United States strengthened its strategic competition policy towards China.Since then,the relationship between China and the United States has been on a downward spiral.Relations between China and the United States in 2019 can be seen as at their lowest point in 40 years: major government-to-government talks have been largely suspended,people-to-people exchanges have been hampered,and strategic trust between the two countries has declined.The relationship between China and the United States has undergone a substantial transformation.As China and the United States enter a strategic transition period,how should China and the United States deal with and control competition? In order to study the problem in this article,from high-profile "Thucydides Trap",this paper analysis the current China-U.S.relations,we can find Thucydides described the Peloponnesian war between Sparta and Athens to U.S.complaints that China today in the language of the language used in highly similar,,although The Times have changed,the war has not used to compete for national interest,the legal ways to solve the friction,and the optimal solution,the basic logic of conflict and cooperation isalmost the same,"Thucydides Trap" still has theoretical value.Introducing "Thucydides Trap" as the current Sino-U.S.relations as well as the analysis of the future is not a theory to derivative,is carried out within the framework of analysis and draw lessons from experience and therefore is not the default in the future war of China and the United States,but pay more attention to the theory of hegemony countries out of fear of emerging countries growing,prompting use various means to curb,depress the content of the emerging countries.We need to learn from history and remain vigilant.The study of this paper is conducive to grasping the current situation and development trend of Sino-U.S.relations,understanding the root cause and characteristics of the "Thucydides Trap" China and the us have entered,recognizing the U.S.government's policy towards China and its connotation,and proposing solutions.This paper holds that since the Trump administration came into power,the deterioration of the U.S.government's perception of China and the change of its policy towards China from "engagement" to "containment" prove that China and the us have stepped into the "Thucydides Trap" and will continue until China's comprehensive national strength truly surpasses that of the U.S..The fundamental reason is that the narrowing of the power gap between the two countries and the existence of structural contradictions have aroused the concerns and fears of the United States.In the process of containing China's development,the United States has used pan-security methods to suppress China in various fields and make full use of political and economic resources to unilaterally and multilaterally contain China.The Chinese plan to defuse the Thucydides Trap in Sino-U.S.relations should first make a good prediction of the future of China-U.S.relations.At present,the two parties in the United States have reached a consensus to contain China,and the structural contradictions between China and the United States will continue to exist for a long time.Therefore,it is difficult for China and the United States to return to a state of cooperation.Second,China's overall national strength still lags behind that of the United States to some extent.Therefore,no matter how the United States adjustsits policy towards China,the most important thing for China is to improve its capability,increase its internal strength and make every effort to achieve the goal of becoming a great modern socialist country.Third,China should attach importance to the strategic competition between China and the United States,actively promote the communication and exchanges between the two countries,remove misunderstandings,promote the positive interaction between China and the United States,and avoid the misunderstanding that leads to the escalation of competition.Finally,China should stick to the path of peaceful development and work with other countries to build a community with a Shared future for mankind.
