On The Non-forgery Of The "Thucydides Trap" Between China And The United States

China-US relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in today?s world,not only affecting the two countries,but alsocasting a strong spillover effect on related neighboring countries and the world?s political configuration.Since China became the world's second largest economy in 2010,China threat theory has staged a comeback.Particularly since Donald Trump assumed the US presidency in 2017,the Thucydides trap of China-US relationship has become a focus of concern in the entire world.With this in mind,this paper studieswhether China and the US will slide into the Thucydides trap from 2018 to 2050,when China will build itself into a strong and modernized power.This paper also studies how to view China-US relationship properly in order to createfavorable external environments and conditions to realize the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.This paper largely adopts the methods of hierarchicalanalysis,interestanalysis,historical analysis,case analysis and psychological analysis.It studies the possibility of Thucydides trap between China and the US,the Thucydides trap-related factorsin the China policy of the US,the comparison between the powers of China and the US,the nature of the Thucydides trap,the possible options and methodsto contain China,the trap?s impact on China's economic,political and opening-up strategy,and how China can deal with the trap,etc.This paper finds that the Thucydides trap is non-pseudo.A lot of optimistic analysts believe that China does not have the power and willingness to challenge the UShegemony,and so there is no likelihood of confrontation or war between the two countries.Actually,this may not be true to fact.This paper concludes that whether the trap exists is largely dependent upon the US.Give the US policies towards China in the history,the US options and methods to contain China,and President Trump?s peculiarities,the two countries are likely to slip into the trap.This paper helps us keep abreast of the present situation and development trend of China-US relations and recognize the possibility and nature of Thucydides trap.Besides,it also helps us understand the correlation between China-US relationship and other international affairs.Therefore,this paper can help China have a better understanding and handling of the bilateral relations to avoid slipping into the trap and other negative impact,which creates a peaceful and stable international environment for China to achieve the goal of socialist modernization.
