Problem representation is a process that transforms external physical stimulation into internal psychological symbols and output it in a suitable way in mind. It's based on individual problem scenarios to identify problem structures, extract problem information and activate the knowledge experience associated with the memory system.Problem representation is a hot topic in the field of psychology research. There are also many researches in specific subject areas.Among them, the research related to chemistry disciplines focuses on the discussion of the ways of representation about kinds of questions such as chemical calculation, information transfer and concept. But there is basically no study on the preparation of a characterization scale for chemical problems. To solve the problem, this study has established the content framework of the characterization scale for chemistry problems faced by high school students, combining theory with practice and conducting actual interviews after consulting and analyzing a large number of documents to investigate the problem representation of high school students and semantically code the survey results. The questionnaire is revised and measured repeatedly.Finally,900 students from five high schools in different regions and levels are formally tested. The project is screened by SPSS21,and the theoretical model of the problem characterization scale is initially established through exploratory factor analysis.By using the homogeneity reliability and validity test, conclusions can be got as followings:(1)This study initially has established the structure of the senior middle school students' characterization scale of chemical problems, which is mainly divided into external characterization and internal characterization. The two major characterization methods include eight factors in total.(2)Exploratory factor analyses show that the scale consists of eight dimensions, including textual representation, linguistic representation, graph representation, model representation, concept representation, principle representation, mathematical representation and method representation.(3)The reliability analysis results show that the internal consistency coefficients of the scale is 0.918 and of each dimension is between 0.784?0.939.The half-reliability coefficient of the scale is 0.884 and of each dimension is between 0.764 and 0.955.All of them have met the measurement requirements.(4)The results of validity analysis show that the correlation coefficient between each dimension and the scale is between 0.414 and 0.612,and both are significant at 0.01 level. The correlation coefficient between each dimension and academic achievement is between 0.293 and 0.472.The correlation coefficient with academic performance is 0.740,and both are significant at the 0.01 level. Conclusions:The reliability and validity of the preliminary scale are good.It highlights the characteristics of chemistry and can be used as a tool to evaluate the high school student's ability of chemical representation.
