2017 was the twenty-fifth year of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Korea.In the past twenty five years,while China experienced a steady growth in its overall national strength,the number of Chinese language learners in Korea increased gradually.According to statistics about the number of international students in China,students from Korea was ranked the first among all others,with up to seventy thousands.This was the fifth year since the Office of Chinese Language Council started to organize volunteer Chinese teachers to promote Chinese language in Korea.Teaching Chinese as a second language has become a part of the curriculum in many Korea's primary and secondary schools.By reflecting on the author's own teaching practices in Korea and drawing on the experience of other CPIK volunteer teachers,this essay aims to present a range of practical solutions to address phonetic problems,especially for students with zero basis of Chinese language.The research focused on Korean high school students with zero basis of Chinese language.A range of teaching strategies and pedagogies targeting on the relevant issues will be presented and justified through quantitive analysis of teaching results,combining with the use of Praat phonetic analysis software,error analysis and in-class observations.The first part is the introduction and a summary of literature review,which illustrates the reason and the purpose of choosing this topic.Following by the comparison of phonetic features between Chinese and Korean language,the research will analyse the potential problems in learning Chinese as a second language caused by the differences in these two linguistic systems.Part three is a error analysis of class observations of Korean high school students pronouncing initial and vowel sounds as well as tones in Chinese language.Teaching strategies will be outlined in the fourth part with detailed explanation and the review of strategies currently used by CPIK Chinese teachers.The summary of the research,which is the fifth part of the essay,will provide insights of how the strategies and pedagogies of Teaching Chinese as a second language can be improved,and problems which need to be researched further.The author of this essay believes that the quality of teachers teaching Chinese as a second language in Korea can only be improved by building up the knowledge and the understanding of features and habits of learners,and tailoring their teaching strategies according to the theory and practical experience from in-class observations.
