With the rapid development of higher education in China,the proportion of female in higher education has increased continuously,even exceeding the proportion of male.As a whole,the gender ratio in higher education has basically balanced,but the phenomenon of major gender segregation in colleges is getting increasingly fierce,especially in normal colleges.The normal colleges have gained the nickname “kingdoms of females”.However,this phenomenon is not received much attention.Colleges are regarded as “manpower database” for the labor market.Combining major gender segregation with occupational gender segregation,we can find that selecting the major is not only the individual choice,but the complex social factors.Based on the attention to this issue,from the perspective of field theory,this thesis focuses on the current status and influencing factors of major gender segregation in normal colleges,and then puts forward some feasible strategies.Therefore,through the questionnaire survey and interviews,this thesis uses the framework of field theory to analyze the influencing factors of undergraduates' major selection from four dimensions: social field,school field,family field and psychological field.SPSS22.0 software is used to collect and analyze the survey results.According to the results of survey,this thesis finds that the undergraduates are affected by various capitals(economic capital,cultural capital,social capital)and habitus(social field-habitus;family field-habitus;family field –habitus;psychological field –habitus).Besides,under the influence of cultural reproduction and symbolic violence,the major gender segregation is formed.As a consequence,from the perspective of field theory,this thesis proposes the following strategies for the issue of major gender segregation in normal colleges: Firstly,to eliminate the “capital” in the social,school,and family fields that hinders the choice of students.Secondly,to remove the habitus in the social,school,family and psychological fields that lags behind of higher education field.Thirdly,to resolve the problem of gender segregation that presents the dilemma in occupation field.Through this thesis study,I hope that it can provide the value for the improvement of major gender segregation in teachers colleges,so as to ease the gender segregation in teachers' major field.
