The rapid advance of urbanization since China's reform and opening up,urbanization rates in most regions of China increased at more than 1% per year with the result that some developed areas reached a high level of urbanization, while urbanization developments in many areas were not completely in the state of peri-urbanization and different development patterns of population peri-urbanization had happened in different areas, which were affected by the unique city and countryside dual structure and household registration system. In order to further study problems of population peri-urbanization,this study collated basic theories about peri-urbanization based on related researches on peri-urbanization at home and abroad;on the basis of the lewis dual economic structure theory, push and pull theory, darrow model, scale and scale effect theory,we analyzed the regional difference and spatial evolution characteristics of population peri-urbanization at multi-scales in China, and explored the heterogeneity and the development trend of geographical phenomena at different spatial scales, and what was more was to provide a reference frame for coordinating regional developments and making related policy after understanding deeply about the scale and space effects in population peri-urbanization area. This study employed the coefficient of variation, scale variance, statistical analysis, geographically weighted regression and other methods to analyze regional differences and spatial evolution characteristics of population peri-urbanization in China during years of 2000 and 2010 on the county, prefecture and provincial three levels;multi-scale classification characteristics, spatial distribution changes, spatial agglomeration types and etc indexes of the population peri-urbanization were demonstrated separately in the form of charts through the geographic information system software ArcGis and related drawing softwares. The results were as followings: regional differences of China's peri-urbanization all showed a gradual expansion trend at three scales since 2000;spatial differences of the peri-urbanization at different scales were significant, and the smaller the spatial scale, the larger the difference in the peri-urbanization area, showing the overall east-west gradient development pattern;the spatial correlation pattern at each scale was relatively stable, among which the nesting zone of "High-High" type was mostly distributed in the southeast coastal area and the "low-low" type was concentrated in the western region.OLS model and GWR model were introduced to reveal the drive mechanism of spatial differences, driving evolutional forces of the population peri-urbanization pattern into three aspects: economic development level, population flow and industrial structure. Finally, this study combined related theories of the population peri-urbanization,lessons learned from the foreign peri-urbanization development process and specific national conditions in China to put forward corresponding countermeasures and suggestions: accelerating reforms of the household registration system, optimizing the industrial structure, allocating resources between urban and rural areas rationally, and improving the ability of agricultural transfer population into the urban life.
