Online courses have arisen in recent years with the development of information technology.The online courses market keeps growing at a fast pace in course offerings and enrollment.Instructional videos are essential components of online courses and they are typically the main form of content delivery as well as the greatest cost driver of oline courses production.Instructional videos should be designed in a variety of ways that influence the ability to achieve pedagogical objectives and desired learning outcomes to deliver content clearly and to promote students learning.How to improve the quality and production efficiency of instructional videos has captured the attention of higher education researchers,policy makers and practitioners worldwide.Literature analysis and content analysis are the main research methods of this paper.Firstly,this paper collected related materials and coded eight principles and guidelines of instructional videos by means of literature analysis.Secondly,it summarized four-dimensional principles and guidelines including instructional content,audiovisual representation,guidiance & interaction and tempo.Thirdly,it proposed a categorization of online courses video styles by means of literature analysis.And it disscussed the current usage of styles and features through the analysis of 384 instructional videos.Then,it constructed four-dimensional principles and guidelines of instructional videos based on the related theories and research studies.Besides,it provided an overview of the design process of “Short Story in English A Reading Course” based on the constructed principles and guidelines.Besides,a handbook is provided to serve as a through overview of the process of designing and developing instructional videos.The principles and guidelines constructed by this paper are systematic,which can be used to improve the quality and production efficiency of instructional videos,and to assess instructional videos.
