In Western rural region in China,Geography is an outlying subject,worthy of little attention,for the Middle school students.The students have great trouble mastering it.This article discusses and explores current problems and conditions in their Geography study so as to gain related solutions and help update Geography teaching.The following survey is made by investigation and summarizing the middle school students' Geography academic difficulties both in china and abroad.With as many as 197 candidates taking part in Kang Xian,here come the following findings: first,most of the surveyed tend to think it difficult to study Geography;second,low grades are usually observed among Junior One students;third,many of them do not work hard enough in their study;forth,such major problems as less motivation in class involvement,narrow-scoped thinking strategies and mechanic recitations do occur.Summing the facts above,we have brought in 2 groups of factors that affects the students' performances.The first is subjective,including an inadeguate attention towards Geography,a narrow-scoped knowledge,a lock of interest,improper methods and not enough individual efforts;the second objective,including different levels of teaching ability,improper teaching methods,bad environment,insufficient teaching facilities,and low expectations from the students themselves,family,school and the society.Therefore,the pen-holder recommends that to promote middle school Geography teaching we must call for teamwork and realistic advice from 4 sides: the students themselves,the family,our society and the school.
