Academic help seeking is a kind of behavior that students ask for help from teachers and classmates in the form of oral inquiry when they are unable to solve difficulties in school.According to the existing research, the types of academic help seeking are usually divided into three categories: executive help-seeking,instrumental help-seeking and avoidance of help-seeking.In this study, questionnaires and interviews are used to understand the type distribution and influencing factors of pupils’ academic help seeking, and provide guidance and strategies for teachers to cultivate students’ communicative ability and help seeking skills.Based on social exchange theory, this study summarizes the process of help seeking, discusses the age, gender and academic achievement of the students, and analyzes the peer relationship and teacher support from the helpers. In this study,a total of 400 students in grades three or four and five were surveyed, using The primary school students’ academic help seeking questionnaire and the students’ perceived teacher expectancy questionnaire. The results of the survey showed that(1)in grade,as the grade gradually increased, more students are willing to ask for help.In terms of gender, there was no significant difference between boys and girls.(2)In academic achievement, mathematics,Chinese and English subjects find significant differences between academic achievement and instrumental help-seeking.The more students with better academic achievement, the more they like to choose instrumental help-seeking.(3)In the aspect of peer relationship, students with good peer relationship use more instrumental help-seeking,less executive help-seeking and avoidance of help-seeking.(4)In the sense of perceived teachers’ expectations, the students perceived high expectations from teachers use more instrumental help-seeking and less avoidance of help-seeking.On the whole, pupils’ academic help seeking behavior is influenced by their personality characteristics, helpers and help seeking environment. Most pupils choose instrumental help-seeking in learning.According to the research results, this paper puts forward the following suggestions to help teachers cultivate students’ help seeking skills and improve their interpersonal skills in teaching.First, teachers should cultivate the students’ ability of self insight and guide students to clear their own needs for help.Secondly, teachers should stimulate students’ interest in learning and encourage students to set up correct motivations for help.Meanwhile, teachers should create favorable conditions so that students can feel the safe environment. It is necessary to provide some skills to help students to reflect and summarize,to master effective learning strategies,so that they have the ability to learn for life to adapt to the development of the future society.
