The textbook is the carrier of a particular culture,it is the result of careful selection by editors based on certain values.Middle school Chinese textbooks have created a large number of characters,which constitute an important reference group for students.It has an important influence on the development of students' moral qualities and behavioral habits.This paper takes the whole Republic of China(1912-1949)as the time node,according to the development of middle school Chinese textbooks,it is divided into three stages: the period of the Chinese language,the mixed use of the national language,and the period of the new Chinese language,and a simple carding of the development course of the Chinese textbook for the three stages.The author selects 52 representative textbooks as the research samples which is based on the four dimensions of gender,age,country and identity,the author analyzes the characters of the 52 textbooks in the system of statistical analysis and content analysis,and then explores the evolution of the characters.In terms of gender,influenced by the women's liberation movement,the number of women in textbooks has increased significantly.Professional women have gradually replaced traditional traditional women with good wife and motherhood as the main image of women in textbooks.They are no longer “boudoir woman” who are confined to family life.They begin to walk out of their families and into society and participate in various production activities in society.In terms of age,under the guidance of the western child-based theory,the compilation of textbooks begins to focus on students' life and practical experience,and students were endowed with independent personality and value.In textbooks,the situation of adult monopoly has been changed and many young children have appeared.In terms of country,textbooks are no longer limited to the shaping of national figures,and developed countries in Europe and the United States became the main source of foreign characters.They are involved in the image of people in many fields,such as foreign science,culture and society.The selected foreign figures embody the universal value orientation and moral pursuit of all mankind,regardless of national borders,race,or ethnicity.In terms of identity,Ordinary people gradually replace the traditional moral figures such as “The princely and sages” and becomes the main group of people in textbooks.Scientists,engineers,and other people who have made outstanding contributions to science are valued,textbook characters are becoming more and more lifelike and civilian.The last,based on the statistics and collation of the Chinese textbooks in the middle school of the Republic of China,the author finds that there are several problems in the selection of characters in textbooks,such as the low proportion of professional women,the failure of foreign cultural characteristics to be reflected in textbooks,and the use of textbooks as political education tools.
