Under the background of globalization and acceleration of urbanization, more and more cities choose major events to reposition and realize their leapfrog development. With the help of major events, the city can quickly gather all kinds of resources in China and the world, boost urban industrial transformation and upgrading, and become a world-famous city with international influence.During the "Thirteenth Five-YearPlan" period,China proposed to place strategic emerging industries in a more prominent position in economic and social development. This also shows that the urban industrial structure is facing further optimization and adjustment, and economic profitability is not the main reason for a city to hold events.Expanding the international influence of cities, attracting foreign direct investment, and promoting the optimization and upgrading of urban industrial structure often become the main purpose of replacing large-scale events in many developing country cities. In the 21st century, more and more Chinese cities are bidding for large-scale sports events, but the experience of international urban development also shows that holding large-scale sports events is a "double-edged sword" for urban development. Therefore,it is particularly important to correctly assess the impact of hosting large-scale sports events on the development of urban industries.Starting from the concept of large-scale sports events, this paper discusses the functional mechanism and influence mechanism of large-scale sports events on urban industrial development and upgrading from the perspectives of vertical industrial chain development and horizontal urban construction. The research results can provide a certain decision-making reference for Chinese cities to undertake more large-scale international activities in the future.First of all, this paper defines the basic concepts of large-scale sports events, and then discusses and analyzes several ways in which major events affect urban development, especially there is a paradox between the uncertainty of short-term economic results and the fierce competition between cities for the right to hold the competition. This paper also summarizes the influence of previous research conclusions on various industries, and sorts out several industries that are significantly affected, laying a foundation for the following research. On this basis, this paper discusses the motives of local governments to host events and the impact mechanism of events on urban development. It is believed that the incentive effect of hosting the event on local government is mainly because the event can attract foreign direct investment and increase local land use rights, thus bringing economic effect to local area.Secondly, sports events can meet the political performance of local officials and improve their performance assessment.According to the study of the cities that have hosted the events in the past,it can be found that the impact of sports events on the city has a phased characteristic, which can significantly promote the substantial growth of the economy in the short term. However, due to the large investment in the early stage, there will be crowding out effect on the later stage, which will lead to the phenomenon of insufficient economic growth momentum after the event. In the long run,to guide the smooth transformation and upgrading of urban industries through the competition, technological progress and the accumulation of high-end human capital are also needed. In order to deeply explore the impact of large-scale events on the development of urban industry, this article regards each event as a quasi-natural experiment, using PSM propensity matching method to match each experimental group to the corresponding control group, and then using the double difference method(DID)assess the impact of major events on different industries. In order to achieve the goal of industry segmentation, the event research method is further used to identify which industries will be affected by the hosting of major competitions. In this paper,22 large-scale sports events with national influence from 2000 to 2017 were selected, and the investment and output indexes of different urban industries were constructed by using the panel data of 70 cities of large and medium-sized cities and above, and the data of listed enterprises of various cities in the CSMAR database.DID model was built by matching the control group of cities in the corresponding experimental group through PSM inclination to study the different impacts of large-scale sports events on the first, second and third industries of cities. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:(1)the secondary industry and the tertiary industry of the host cities of major competitions show significant growth in the later stage of the event, and the growth of the tertiary industry is significantly higher than that of the secondary industry.(2)international competitions have a greater impact on the development of urban tertiary industry, while domestic competitions have a more obvious promoting effect on the host city's secondary industry.(3)major competitions have a significant negative impact on heavy industry enterprises, have a significant promoting effect on the cultural and educational sports goods manufacturing industry, and promote the transformation of urban secondary industry to tertiary industry,(4)the whole industries closely related to tertiary industry, such as transportation industry, urban infrastructure construction, financial service industry, retail industry, tourism industry and catering industry, all have obvious upward trend after the event. How to seize these industries in the tertiary industry with short-term performance rise and make good use of the development window is the key point that every city government planning to host major competitions must consider. Finally, based on the theoretical and empirical analysis results of this study, the research conclusions of this paper are drawn. Then, relevant policy Suggestions are proposed based on the current development reality of Chinese cities and the bidding for the competition. It is hoped that relevant conclusions can play a corresponding role in social practice...
