Research On Hospitalized Children Parents Empathy Ability

Empathy is an important ability in human interaction,whether in conversation or in daily life.People,with strong empathy are more sensitive to others'feelings and to think in others' shoes,so that they understand others' feelings and behaviors better.Parents with empathic ability can support hospitalized children better and reduce the side effects of illness and hospitalization.As well,it can help parents to understand their children's feelings,comfort the children's negative emotions,and improve the children's medical cooperation,so that it quicken the process of hospitalized children recuperating health.This study used the Interpersonal Reactivity Index-Chinese(IRI-C)to investigate the hospitalized children parents' empathy situation,and to explore the positive effects of services on empathy of social casework and group work.This study was comprised from two parts:firstly,70 parents of hospitalized children in four departments of Kunming E hospital were taken as subjects to investigate and analyze the empathic ability.Based on the voluntary principle,I selected 8 parents whose overall empathy score was lower than 51 as the service objects from the department of cardiothoracic surgery and oncology.I used the pre-and post-empathic ability design to provide individual and Group services with empathy training for parents of hospitalized children.The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:At present,70 hospitalized children parents'theoretical empathy ability of is above average.Their empathic ability is relatively good in all dimensions of empathy,such as empathy concern,personal depress,and point thinking.The best part is empathy concern,and their cognitive empathic ability is also relatively good.However,the hospitalized children parents have relatively insufficient empathy in the dimension of imagination and in the emotional empathy.According to the hospitalized children parents' theoretical empathy average score 65.09 as the standard.I divided them into high score group and low score group.The difference between the two groups was significant.And the empathy score of the parents in the high group was significantly higher than that in the low group.Based on the method of medical social work,it was effective to improve the empathy ability of hospitalized children parents whose score is less than 51.Through special forms of individual and group intervention in the medical situation,the hospitalized children parents'empathy ability was improved.
