Junior middle school biology in China is a discipline intended to develop student’s ability in becoming an independent learner and innovator.The Junior middle school biology curriculum is highly valued in shaping student’s learning growth as it is designed with the goal of improving student’s scientific literacy and fostering talent and skills for innovation.There is a lack of studies about the current status of Junior middle school biology teaching in cities and rural areas of Henan Province.Therefore,this study is designed to investigate and analyze the status of biology teaching in Junior middle schools from the city and rural areas of Henan.As the capital city of Henan,Zhengzhou is equipped with a richer amount of educational resources to teach biology than the rural areas.In this study,we have gathered data about the status of Junior middle school biology teaching in Zhengzhou and in rural areas.The ultimate goal of this study was to compare and contrast teaching methods from different region areas of Henan so that Junior middle school biology curriculum in urban and rural areas of Henan can be improved.This study was performed through a detailed literature search,questionnaire/survey forms,interview and data analysis.Three Junior middle schools in Zhengzhou and three Junior middle schools in the rural area were involved in this study.Junior middle schools in Zhengzhou that participated in this study were Zhengzhou Rotary National Language Junior middle school,Zhengzhou Huimin Junior middle school,and Zhengzhou No.106 Junior middle school.Rural area(Gongyi)Junior middle schools consisted of Xicun Junior middle school,Gongyi Huiguo Town No.1 Junior High School and Zhitian Town No.1Junior middle school.We surveyed a total of 21 biology teachers,360 students and 6 school administrators from these schools.The survey consisted of questions about the basic situation of the school,basic situation of the teacher,teaching methods,teacher’s competence,student’s learning attitude,learning motivation,and laboratory experience.The results of the survey reveal that the resources,methods and quality of Junior middle school biology teaching in Zhengzhou have improved compared to the rural areas.Although the society has changed its view of Junior middle school biology,biology lessons remain difficult to be implemented in classrooms as problems have been found that hinder its development.The first problem stems from the ‘middle schooler proficiency test’ as this test directly affects attitude of the schools,teachers and students about biology.Secondly,there are imbalances in school resources to establish biology laboratories,provide teaching equipment and build teacher’s qualifications.Third,the teaching methods of rural area teachers are still lacking as the gap in professional abilities of city and rural teachers is relatively wide.Fourth,students share different views regarding the purpose of learning biology.Fifth,students are not motivated enough to learn and they do not have the incentives to do so.Sixth,students have poor learning habits.Based on the results from the survey and references from literatures,the following suggestions have been made to improve Junior middle school biology in Henan.First,the department of education needs to change its view about biology and values the importance of Junior middle school biology by paying attention to the imbalanced investment of city and rural educational resources.Second,schools needs to design and organize biology curriculum better to improve the student’s experience of learning biology.The school also needs to develop better strategies in recruiting,retaining,and assigning teachers to teach biology.Third,teachers should improve their attitude and develop enthusiasm for teaching biology.They also should receive further professional training in teaching biology and improve their professional literacy.Moreover,teachers should talk to students more and understand the student’s views so that students can develop scientific learning interest.Fourth,students need to be motivated to learn biology by educating them about the importance of biology.They need help in improving their learning habits and methods so that they have an initiative to learn biology.
