Over the past several decades video games have experienced a boom in popularity that has made them one of the entertainment industries with the highest revenue. With the widespread influence of the internet, video games have spread out to a variety of countries and become carriers of the culture of their country of origin. This entry into a foreign market has forced video game developers to adapt the content of their game, both culturally and linguistically to the target country in order to achieve improved financial results. This study analyses the prior academic research and hypothesises that several factors are vital to a game’s financial success in the Chinese market. It performs a study with a mixed research method of quantitative and qualitative design into the case of Riot Games’ MOBA title-League of Legends and the perceptions of Chinese players of the game’s performance according to the factors theorised in the theoretical framework to be positively correlated with financial success. To conclude, this study finds out that among the five hypothesised factors influencing a company’s success in the Chinese market, the Free-to-Play model,an eSports-centric strategy and cultural adaptation are the most impactful on the game’s perception among Chinese audiences and have the highest potential to improve the game’s performance.
