In this thesis,through the written examination,the author has tested the orthographic awareness of students at the elementary level of Chinese in Amata Wittaya School in Thailand amid the process of Chinese acquisition and analyzed the result.The thesis mainly examines the formation and development of students' orthographic awareness on the grounds of the Chinese literacy,and then discusses its characteristics based on the test to middle school students at the primary level of Chinese in Thailand who have already learned Chinese characters for one year.On the basis of the analysis and the main factors affecting Chinese character teaching in Thailand,the paper has put forward the teaching strategies of Chinese characters which are proper to Thailand students whose Chinese ability is at the primary level.This thesis consists of five parts.The first part makes a compendious introduction to the relevant researches about Chinese orthographic theories and awareness both at home and abroad,and then elaborates the theoretical basis of linguistics and psychology as well as the major contents of this study.In the second part,based on the statistical analysis of the result,the paper further discusses the formation and development of Chinese orthographic awareness among the subjects.The conclusion is that all of the respondents have shaped the orthographic awareness of Chinese characters and their ability strengthens with the grade.Firstly,in the task of Chinese character recognition,Chinese orthographic awareness is prior to be shaped in the left-right structure compared with that in the up-down structure and the single-element structure.Besides,the level of component position awareness is close to that of component awareness,with the formation of the former being slightly previous to the latter.Secondly,the development of awareness of component structure is the best in the task of writing pattern.The level of component structure awareness in the left-right structure and thesingle-element structure is prior to that in the up-down structure;the level of component awareness is previous to that of the layout awareness and in the single-element structure,layout awareness is prior to component awareness.The third part analyzes the factors that influence the formation and development of Chinese character orthographic awareness,including students' learning time and ability of Chinese.The fourth part discusses and summarizes the factors that influence the effectiveness of Chinese character teaching in Thailand from the aspects of the characteristics of Chinese characters,and the language context where the learners study and live as well as the individual influence.In the last part,based on the results of the research,this paper analyzes the current situation of overseas Chinese characters teaching and relevant teaching theories,and holds the view that the teaching of Chinese characters in Thailand at the primary stage needs to adapt to the cognitive process of learners,consider individual factors,adopt scientific teaching procedures and design reasonable classroom activities.
