A Study On The Relationship Between Spouses Of Chinese Residents And The Acquisition Of Personal Elite Status

The ways and channels of obtaining personal professional status have always been the focus and hot topic of sociological research.Most of the studies focus on the impact of the original family on individual social status,in order to find class segregation and inequality in society.But after marriage,the individual forms a new family and establishes a new family network,and the spouse's influence on the individual's social status gradually appears.Therefore,this paper mainly focuses on the marriage path,using CGSS2008 data,according to the characteristics of different types of capital inheritance and transformation,to study the impact of spouse's socio-economic status on personal elite status.The results of this study show that: firstly,different types of elite have different ways of capital inheritance,and the transmission of cultural capital needs long-term accumulation.Spouse's cultural capital is not helpful for individuals to become professional elites,while political capital can be transmitted directly through social network and economic capital can also be transferred directly,so spouse's political capital or economic capital can be transferred directly.Being a political elite or a market elite directly helps.Secondly,different types of elites have different ways of capital transformation.In China,political capital still plays a dominant role in society,so political capital is easier to be converted into economic capital,while economic capital is difficult to be converted into political capital.Therefore,spouse's political capital can help individuals become market elites,while spouse's economic capital can hardly help individuals become political elites.Thirdly,the influence of spouse and original family on elite status is also very different.Because the use of capital may have the law of diminishing marginal returns,father's capital has been used many times by individuals,and the effect of heterogeneous capital brought by spouse on elite status may be stronger.Fourthly,there are gender differences in the influence of spouses on elite status acquisition.Although the transfer and transformation of elite capital are applicable to different genders,in the labor market,compared with women,men are more likely to master capital and transfer it to their spouses.
