Oral Chinese teaching is an important part of teaching the Chinese language in Singapore secondary schools.Oral Chinese teaching plays a vital role in enhancing the speaking proficiency of the secondary school students.With ongoing change in the Singapore's social and language environment,learning of Oral Chinese for secondary school students has been limited to classroom teaching.In order to enable students to learn oral Chinese systematically to enhance their social interactive skills,this paper analyses the thematic teaching and sets out advantages of the language B curriculum of the IBDP program and explores the possibility of incorporating such curriculum into Singapore's teaching as further refinement to its teaching of Chinese language as a second language.At the same time,the research undertaken behind this paper can further develop and enrich the conceptual foundation and breadth of Singapore's Oral Chinese teaching,increase the usage and effectiveness,and ultimately raising the standard of speaking proficiency of Singapore secondary school students.Research into teaching of secondary school level Chinese oral has revealed inherent problems which adversely affected cultivation of secondary school students' oral interaction ability.In particular,the teaching targets,materials and methodologies needed improvement.To realise this objective and to promote the Chinese language as a daily language of the Singapore youth,this paper provided an in-depth analysis of the design behind theme based teaching,including application and activities,and identified how the IBDP programme language B teaching can be relevant to Singapore secondary school's oral Chinese teaching especially in formulation of targets,principles and teaching methodologies.On this basis,this paper sets out a definitive teaching framework for oral teaching in Singapore secondary school.In closing,this paper supports the view that IBDP programme language B teaching is useful and practical for enhancing the oral communication capabilities of the Singapore secondary school students.
