On Developing College Students' Water Safety Skill Standard

Recently,drowning accidents among college students occur so frequently that call widespread social concern.This safety problem has to be handled by the government promptly.Traditional swimming instruction emphasis on swimming technique,thus the solely reliance on general swimming instruction is inadequate.Water safety experts widely believe that swimming skills and lifesaving techniques are both crucial in developing teenagers' water safety skills.In 2002 world water safety conference,eighty per cent of the experts hold the view that drowning is not inevitable,which has been confirmed as well in many other countries.New Zealand and Canada are pioneers on the publicity of lifesaving skills,developing lifeguard and the research of lifesaving theory as they have done that since 100 years ago.Drowning accidents in those two countries are well-controlled as a result of the gradual set up of water safety skill standard system.Water safety education is rapidly developing whereas domestic drowning accidents are frequent.Thus,it is highly necessary to set up China's own water safety skill standard system by learning from developed countries in order to prevent or reduce the drowning accidents among college students.The author use following research method:expert interviews,questionnaire survey,questionnaire screen,mathematical statistics,expert argumentation.College students water safety skill evaluation standard is determined,which includes the standard system structure and the weight of each factors in the standard system.The conclusion is drawn by having 486 college students evaluated by return test:(1)The structure of 9 sublevels under 3 levels are determined to evaluate college students' water safety skill level;(2)The system of elementary level,intermediate level and advanced level are established for college students' water safety skill level evaluation;(3)The college students' water safety skill evaluation system is established,which consists of three sub-standards(elementary,intermediate and advanced).(4)Return test for all samples shows that the new-developed standard is able to preliminarily apply to evaluate college students' water safety skill.This research enrich the content of water safety skill standard in China,provide theoretical reference for the development of water safety system.By developing college students' water safety skill standard,students' lifesaving skills,which is often neglected during swimming instruction,would be nicely compensated.In addition,it provides scientific guidance to prevent or reduce drowning accidents among college students.It also offers college students opportunities to learn water safety skills comprehensively.Moreover,it may become the measuring tool for college experiment teaching.
