Kuo Ping-Wen is a prominent educator in China,and he is also the first Chinese scholar to obtain a doctorate in education.He is rich in knowledge of education and extremely experienced in running schools,and has contributed tremendously to the development of education in China.Between 1921 and 1925,he mainly focused on the founding of South-Eastern University.During his tenure as headmaster of South-Eastern University,he introduced American school-running model and advocated putting teacher's education in universities.His first move was to change the educational system of Nanjing Senior Normal School and made it become South-Eastern University;He then worked on implementing democratic management of schools,4 kinds of balanced education,the policy of treasuring academics and the purpose of serving the society.By doing so,the good reputation of South-Eastern University started to spread.Besides,the implementation of these revolutionary ideas had enriched and completed the practice of Chinese school-running.By researching his practice of establishing the South-Eastern University and the prominent idea of running schools,we can we can have a better understanding of the contemporary history of education.Besides,we can review his elegance as an educator while utilizing the thoughts of the educators in that period to illuminate the future development.This paper integrated the corresponding works,summarized his ideas he implemented and experiences he had during the founding of South-Eastern University and the practice of education,and the influence he brought to the current education.This paper consist of 5 main parts.Part 1:The introduction mainly talks about the choice of topic,its current state and the significance of studying it.Then the choice of references is discussed,and there are some brief illustrations of the problems and the methodologies I used.Part 2: The introduction of the connection between Kuo Ping-Wen and the South-Eastern University.I combined the his study life and his experience of studying abroad with the establishment of the South-Eastern University to illustrate the origin of his ideas of founding the university and the tough process of building it out of nothing.I thoroughly stated his experience of studying at Columbia and Wooster,and illustrated his living and working experience after he got back.The demonstration is in three parts: the forming of his ideas,the implementation of ideas,and the troubles he faced during the process.Part 3: Introduction of his thoughts about higher education.I illustrated the formation of his ideas of school running in four different aspects: The educational thought of "three educations simultaneously",the normal education mode of "combining normal education with university",the guideline of "four balances" and the management mode of "advanced democracy" ?This laid the foundation for further discussion of the effectiveness of the practice.Part 4: In this part I briefly summarized his achievements in running South-Eastern University,and utilized the way of researching the history of education in finding the results from five aspects: the rules of management,subject setting,faculty and equipment,personnel training and international vision.And then summarize the impact it had brought.Part 5: Analysis of his tenure as headmaster of South-Eastern University.This paper analyzes guo bingwen's thoughts on running southeast university from three aspects: the mission of running school of "education saves the country",the reference of "double tops" to universities,and the understanding and reflection of the differences between Chinese and western universities.By analyzing his practice of founding the South-Eastern University,we found out his position in and contribution to the contemporary history of education,and it also greatly promoted studies on university principals.At the mean time,it acts as a good example for the future development of Chinese higher education.
