For more than 40 years since the reform and opening up,with the rapid development of China's national economy, the income level of urban and rural residents has continued to increase, but the problem of urban-rural income gap has gradually become prominent.Although the relative income gap between urban and rural areas in China has been decreasing year by year since 2009,it is still high.Among them, the urban and rural income level in the western region has increased rapidly, but compared with the eastern and central regions, the income gap between urban and rural in the western region is even more severe. In the existing research literature,it has been confirmed that educational differences are indeed an important factor affecting income inequality. As a basic education in China, the balanced allocation of compulsory education resources plays an important role in narrowing the urban-rural income gap. Therefore, this paper selects the provincial panel data of the western region from 2007 to 2017 to empirically investigate the impact of urban-rural compulsory education resource allocation on the urban-rural income gap.It is of great practical significance to reduce the urban-rural income gap in the western region, realize the balanced allocation of compulsory education resources, promote the coordinated development of urban and rural areas, and realize comprehensively the well-off society in the west and the country.Firstly, the income gap between urban and rural areas and the difference of urban-rural compulsory education resources allocation in the western region are analyzed. In terms of urban-rural income gap,it is found that the income gap between urban and rural areas in the western region shows a downward trend from 2007 to 2017,but it is still significantly higher than in the eastern and central regions. With regard to the allocation of compulsory education resources,it is found that after years of development, the difference in the urban-ruralcompulsory education resources allocation in the western region is narrowing, but it is still in an uneven state, especially in the allocation of human resources in ordinary primary schools, the level of urban teachers is much higher than that in rural areas.Secondly, the provincial panel data from 2007 to 2017 in the western region are selected to empirically study the impact of the differences of financial, human, and material resources allocation in urban and rural compulsory education on the urban-rural income gap.The regression results show that the balanced allocation of urban and rural compulsory education resources in the western region has a significant effect on reducing the urban-rural income gap. Moreover, the narrowing effect varies by education category. In addition,it is empirically verified that the reasonable allocation of urban and rural compulsory education resources, especially human resources, has a significant effect on reducing the urban-rural wage income gap and the urban-rural operating net income gap. Finally, according to the research conclusions of this paper, from the perspective of urban-rural compulsory education resource allocation and urbanrural income composition, this paper proposes policy recommendations to reduce the urban-rural income gap in the western region.First, accelerate the balanced development of compulsory education between urban and rural areas in the western region, including ensuring the financial investment in rural compulsory education, strengthening the construction of rural compulsory education teachers, and accelerating the process of informatization in rural compulsory education;second, promote the steady growth of important rural income sources in the western region, including promoting the export of rural labor, vigorously developing rural business industries, and continuing to increase the scale of rural transfer payments.
