Homesickness can be defined as the distress caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home or familiar environment and closed people that redound to ruminations and a strong preoccupation with the former environment and strong longing to return to the previous environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the dimensions of homesickness and its relationship with other related factors by means of quantitative and qualitative research,so as to have a deeper understanding of homesickness. In study 1,a total of 730 college students were selected as research objects in three times. The questionnaire on Chinese college students' homesickness was compiled and its reliability and validity were tested. In study 2,a total of 402 college students were measured.Their homesickness, resilience, satisfaction of life, depression and socio-demographic variables were assessed by the Homesickness Questionnaire, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC),the Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS),the Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)and the Socio-demographic Questionnaire. The study also explored the relationship between homesickness, resilience, life satisfaction and depression. In study 3,a total of 402 college students were measured.Their homesickness, attachment style, life satisfaction and socio-demographic variables were assessed by the Homesickness Questionnaire, the Chinese version of Adult Attachment Scale(AAS),the Satisfaction With Life Scale(SWLS)and the Socio-demographic Questionnaire. The study examined the relationship between Emotional Connection dimension of homesickness,Contact Frequency dimension of homesickness and life satisfaction under different attachment types.Study 4 is a qualitative research.a series of one-to-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 interviewees to explore the relationship between homesickness level and their early growth experiences. And the main conclusions are as follows:(1)The Chinese College Students' Homesickness questionnaire includes 18 items and three dimensions: Emotional Connection,Contact Frequency and Hometown Preference.(2)There were significant differences in homesickness for interviewees of different genders, having or do not have siblings. And the age of childbearing with parents was also a variable that affected homesickness.(3)Homesickness was significantly associated with resilience, life satisfaction and depression.(4)Resilience and life satisfaction played multiple mediating effects between homesickness and depression. That is to say, homesickness not only directly reduces the depression level of college students, but also indirectly reduces the depression level by increasing resilience and life satisfaction.(5)For individuals with secure attachment, the Emotional Connection dimension of homesickness played a completely mediating effect between the contact frequency dimension of homesickness and life satisfaction.(6)The psychological significance of homesickness lies in that home and family can bring individual security and provide psychological feelings of being supported, understood and tolerated.(7)The individual's level of personality development, personality characteristics and cognitive style all affect the level of homesickness.(8)Family environment, school environment and social culture all affect the level of homesickness of individuals.(9)video calls with family members, recording current feelings, finding alternative sources of satisfaction, seeking social support, and self-acceptance can all reduce negative feelings associated with homelessness.
