Doctoral education is related to the future and development of a country's higher education.As an important part of the doctoral students' training process,comprehensive examination is of great significance to improve the quality of doctoral students.This study focuses on E university and uses the method of questionnaire survey and interview to explore the implementation status of doctoral comprehensive examination.From the aspect of the understanding of the comprehensive examination,teachers and students believe that the implementation of the comprehensive examination is necessary.The purpose of the examination is to urge students rather than to weed them out.Although diversion and elimination are generally accepted,doctoral students with different admission methods have different attitudes.From the aspect of implementation,the examination forms have the diversification and discipline preference.The examination content focuses on professional knowledge and research capabilities.The faculty pay less attention to the examination process.There is a lack of targeted advice on the examination feedback.As for the examination evaluation,the doctoral students think that the comprehensive examination has no significant effect on improving the quality of doctoral education.But there are significant differences in the exam results among doctoral students with different disciplines and admission methods.Secondly,The degree of difficulty,depth and breadth of exam contents are not highly evaluated by doctoral students.But there are significant differences in the breadth of examinations among doctoral students with different admission methods.In addition,there are some deviations in the implementation of doctoral comprehensive examinations.The deviation of the execution process is mainly manifested in symbolic execution,alternative execution and selective execution.There is also a lack of discipline differences and low evaluation satisfaction of the implementation effect deviation.This study uses Smith model theory for attribution.As for the comprehensive examination system,it is mainly due to the lack of clear goals and the short of localization and perfection.In terms of the execution body of the comprehensive examination,it is mainly due to insufficient recognition of the department and the personal interests of the tutor.In the aspect of target group,it is influenced by the negative mentality and personal interests of doctoral students.As for the implementation environment of the comprehensive examinations,it's affected by the social environment of "human feelings" and "face" as well as the differences in the training mode of doctoral students and the educational environment between China and foreign countries.Based on the above analysis,in order to improve the doctoral comprehensive examination,this research gives the following optimization suggestions from the four aspects.Firstly,to strengthen the top-level design of the comprehensive examination.Secondly,to improve the enforcement at the department level.Thirdly,to strengthen the correct cognition of doctoral students to the examination.Fourthly,to gradually improve the environment for the implementation of the comprehensive examination.
