With the deepening understanding between China and the United States in different aspects,the international community has formed a complex and volatile public opinion field.It is of great practical significance for the Chinese government and media to research how the mainstream media construct China's national image and what kind of national image they construct.However,domestic scholars mainly focus on the overall image of the country,and lack of in-depth research on a single group.Female image is an important carrier of national image.Since the 18 th national congress of the communist party of China,general secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly stressed that women are not inferior to men and that “women can hold up half of the sky”,encouraging every woman to realize her life dream.It is conducive to creating a good media environment for Chinese women and spreading it in the global vision,by analyzing the comparison between Chinese and American mainstream media on the image of Chinese women,and investigating the underlying social and cultural factors.In addition,with the change of international public opinion and the continuous development of gender communication research,the research on Chinese female image has been further deepened.Therefore,this is a problem worthy of long-term attention and research.This paper is divided into six parts: the first part is the introduction,which mainly describes the research background,research significance,domestic and foreign research review and research methods.The second part is the theoretical basis and research design.The paper supported by the agenda setting theory,stereotype theory and social gender theory,using the methods of quantitative analysis to research the reports on Chinese and American mainstream media: People's Daily and Washington post.Time range selected on September 27,2015-September27,2019,120 of the People's Daily and the Washington post 77 as sample,report content from quantity,time,news source,news agenda,subjects of news coverage and their ages,occupations,female roles and the nature of the images.It is the data source of the analysis of the two reports' general situation,the difference comparison,the reasons for the difference and the countermeasures.The third and fourth parts are the images of Chinese women constructed by the Washington post and the People's Daily respectively.The research found that the People's Daily was mainly positive and the Washington post was mostly dominated by negative coverage.The People's Daily transcends binary opposition,separates women from their private roles,and highlights women's subjective consciousness.However,influenced by the nature of the party newspaper,its reports mostly cater to the background of The Times and emphasize the power of role models.However,the images of Chinese women presented by the Washington post are mostly family-centered,weak,passive and sympathetic.Chinese women in the public sphere are also negative images that suffer from harassment,sexual assault,violent threat and social discrimination.The fifth part analyzes the reasons for the unequal representation of Chinese women's international image,and explains the reasons from three aspects: the difference of social environment,the atmosphere of media organizations and the influence of media forms.In today's world power field,the western world,led by the United States,still has strong discourse power.The United States presents a negative image of Chinese women,which affects the international community's cognition and judgment of Chinese women.How to improve the international influence of China's gender issues are the current problems to be solved.In the last part,the paper discusses the communication strategies of Chinese women,achieving from the gender cognition,enhance the voice of women,promote discourse transformation,enhance the balanced coverage,focus on the perspective of audience,and establish a dialogue mode,hoping to transfer a real image of Chinese women.
