A Study Of The Hockey Coverage In People’s Daily From The Framing Theory Perspective (1949-2020)

As the only collective ball sport in the Winter Olympics,ice hockey is known as the "crown jewel" of winter sports.With the successful bid to host the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the Chinese men’s and women’s ice hockey teams gaining direct qualification for the Winter Olympics,the development of ice hockey in China has been given a new opportunity.The paper analyses the coverage of ice hockey in the People’s Daily in order to explore the characteristics of its news framework.The thesis takes 466 ice hockey reports in People’s Daily since the founding of the People’s Republic of China as research samples,takes frame theory as research support,uses documentary data method,text analysis method,content analysis method and expert interview method,adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research,takes Zang Guoren’s frame theory as the theoretical basis,and conducts research in four dimensions,namely the general trend,thematic frame,structural frame and discourse frame of the reports respectively The study also set up different research sub-dimensions under each dimension for data collation and analysis,in an attempt to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the hockey coverage in People’s Daily.The study found that:firstly,the People’s Daily has not paid enough attention to the coverage of ice hockey;secondly,the coverage is diverse,but also suffers from localised and one-sided coverage,with an imbalance between different topics.At various stages of the development of ice hockey in China,its topic setting can better reflect the characteristics of the historical stages of China’s ice hockey development.thirdly,a structural framework dominated by the main events was formed,and the structure of the coverage was rigorous;fourthly,the reporting discourse style was simple,with a single referential resource.In conclusion,the thesis proposes the following suggestions for the ice hockey coverage in People’s Daily:firstly,to establish a global vision of ice hockey news coverage;secondly,to establish a "big sports" view of ice hockey news coverage;thirdly,to optimize the structure of the coverage and strengthen in-depth coverage,fourthly,strengthen the hockey coverage team.
