In the context of China 's proposal to develop the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a world-class Greater Bay Area and the continuous optimization and upgrading of China 's economic structure and the transformation of the driving force for economic growth, the Bay Area is a special regional economy with its powerful The ability to innovate and high economic growth rates have attracted the attention of the world. The success of the Bay Area not only stems from its unique geographical advantages, but also benefits from the concentration of a large number of high-quality universities in the Bay Area.Through cooperation and competition between them, the flow of educational resources is accelerated, and various factors such as talents and knowledge are realized. The spillover of the Bay Area has formed a highly concentrated phenomenon of higher education in the Bay Area, which has provided a steady stream of momentum for the growth of the Bay Area economy. The purpose of this article is to study the mechanism and effect of higher education agglomerations in this special economic entity on economic growth.First, collect data on economic and higher education related indicators of the four Bay Areas: San Francisco Bay Area,New York Bay Area,Tokyo Bay Area and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and conduct a comparative study to analyze the agglomeration characteristics of colleges and universities in the Bay Area.Understand the characteristics and deficiencies of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.Secondly, the spatial descriptive index of higher education agglomeration level is included. The degree of higher education agglomeration in each city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is measured using the location entropy method. There is a significant positive correlation between higher education agglomeration spaces in the Greater Bay Area cities. In the empirical part, the data of eleven cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in 2008-2018 were selected, and the per capita GDP was selected as the explanatory variable describing economic growth. The entropy of higher education agglomeration location was used as the core explanatory variable. The number of patent applications, the degree of foreign trade dependence, and thecontribution rate of the tertiary industry are controlled variables.A space panel model is established and empirical analysis is performed. The empirical results show that the spatial phenomenon of higher education agglomeration has a significant positive effect on economic growth, and that the increase of higher education concentration in a region is not only beneficial to the local economy, but also has a positive spillover effect on the economy of its neighboring areas..In addition,it has been proved that higher education agglomeration can promote the economy by stimulating innovation, but the impact coefficient is small, which indicates that there is a problem of poor conduction in the industry-university-research mechanism in the Greater Bay Area.Based on the above research results, the article puts forward constructive opinions on higher education in the Greater Bay Area:(1)Improving the agglomeration of higher education in the Guangdong,Hong Kong, and Macau Greater Bay Area — based on the development of urban individuals.(2)Give full play to the spillover effect of higher education agglomeration — based on the development between neighboring cities.(3)Dredge the government — schools — research institutes — enterprise transmission channels.
