Artificial intelligence is an emerging technology with the potential to influence the social, economic, and cultural development of the American public.Recent advances in the field of Al have contributed to its integration in virtually every aspect of society. Most notable, however, have been the technology's contributions to the creative industries.Books, music, visual art,and software have all been attributed to AI programs. The music, film, publishing, and software industries combined, account for billions of dollars in annual revenue and are the leading source of cultural exchange between the United States and the rest of the world.Copyright protection has become one of the most important factors guaranteeing the growth of creative industries and providing incentives for the future work of authors and creators. This paper employs an interdisciplinary approach to determine the impact of copyright protection on the American AI industry and how it affects the industry's competitiveness in relation to China-the United States' main competitor in the research, development, and application of AI technologies.A number of steps are taken to achieve this goal.First,a two-tier survey and interview is conducted among prominent AI policy experts, intellectual property scholars, and machine learning scientists from top US institutions.Second,a comprehensive,semi-structured interview is conducted with representatives from two of the leading Chinese AI tech companies-Alibaba Group and iFlytek.Next, statistical data from two of the most recent industries to acquire copyright protection are examined over a long-term period. Conclusions are made on the impact of copyright protection on emerging industries.Secondary data is also used to supplement the results of this study.Data gathered from expert opinions, and statistical secondary data, conclude that copyright protection has limited impact on the initial growth of emerging industries. In the case of the American AI industry, however, strategic government financial investment and targeted policy would act as an early stage accelerator of AI development.Copyright protection,on the other hand, would act as a sustainer of growth once the American AI industry has become an established contributor to the overall economy. Finally, utilitarian theory, established as the most fitting way to approach copyrightprotection in the AI industry,is used to formulate a number of valuable policy recommendations based on the results of this study. These recommendations may be utilized to ensure American AI industry growth and secure the place of the United States as an economic and cultural leader on the world stage.
