Urban agglomerations as a new geographical unit for the country to participate in global competition and international division of labor is a product of the new stage of China's new industrialization and new urbanization. It is the main battlefield for the construction of the “Belt and Road Initiative” and is advancing national economic and social development and further leading the country. In the new era of globalization,it has a pivotal strategic position.Within the urban agglomeration there are many individual cities, which in turn have complex urban interactions in various aspects such as economy, politics, transportation, and society. This interaction can generally attribute intercity relations to two types: competition relationships and cooperation relationships. These two kinds of relationships are also the internal driving forces for the development of urban agglomerations, which continuously drive the increasingly close interaction between cities, the increasing division of labor in cities, the optimization of urban resource allocation, and the promotion of urban agglomerations and urban competitiveness. There are widespread competition and cooperation among cities in urban agglomerations. However, there are few quantitative studies on intercity competition cooperation relations in the urban agglomerations and empirical studies on the impact of intercity competition cooperation on urban competitiveness.Intercity competition and cooperation and its impact on urban competitiveness are of great significance to the development of urban agglomerations.Regarding the selection of empirical research objects, the development of the urban agglomeration of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is relatively mature, and its current construction and development have risen to the height of the country's major development strategy. Therefore,it is highly representative as a research object.Important practical significance. In view of this, this article will first review the relevant research literature on inter-city relations and their impact on urban competitiveness, and then build a comprehensive index system to measure the urban competitiveness of cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to obtain empirical data. The introduction of the more mature Dendrinos-Sonis model developed abroad to quantitatively measure the intercity competition and cooperation, and then empirically study the impact of inter-city competition and cooperation on urban competitiveness by constructing a panel measurement model.policy suggestion. The empirical results of this paper show that the cities in the Greater Bay Area have established a good cooperative and complementary relationship, and only a few cities have a competitive relationship. The inter-city competition and cooperation within the urban clusters has a catalytic effect on the development of the individual cities' own competitiveness. The inter-city competition relationship has an inhibitory effect on the competitiveness of other cities within the urban agglomeration, and the intercity cooperation relationship has a positive effect on the competitiveness of other cities within the agglomeration. In the future, the government can improve the inter-city relations within the urban agglomeration by implementing cooperative incentive mechanisms, establishing a reasonable division of labor system, and strengthening the construction of transportation networks.
