The French fantastic literature was born in the 1830s,a period when the social context provided a favorable environment:the terror of the Revolution, the anxiety caused by the disorders of the political environment and the doubt about the reign of reason during the Age of Enlightenment. The science, psychology and occult sciences of the time built also part of the materials. The symbolist writers brought a new expansion to it at the end of the century. Many writers have worked on this type of prevailing literature at that time, and leaved behind them many classic pieces, which makes the fantastic even more important in the French literature history. As a special literature genre, the fantastic possesses values in literary, epistemological and social areas. However, this type is much less significant in China. Most of the translated works are spread in the personal collections of famous writers, and seem to be less known compared with other popular works.Other translations are also more or less ignored. This calls for a historical review on its introduction and translation in China,in order to reveal later the reasons from the angle of translation studies, and finally discuss its potential development by taking account of these particular values.Based on the previous historical records and the theoretical studies, the thesis made a global study on the introduction and translation of the French fantastic literature in China, including the history, characteristics and values. This thesis consists of three parts:introduction, exposition and conclusion. In the introduction,we gave a brief summary of the topic, background and value. The second part consists of three chapters. In the first chapter,we summarize the history of french fantastic literature in China. There are three periods divided:the introduction began in the 1920s,the 1980s and the beginning of the 21st century are two points that mark the important progresses.During this long review, the fantastic received evidently more attention in recent years. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of characteristics and reasons. The introduction in China is generally delayed.Concentrated on the three realistic writers as Balzac,Maupassant, and Merimee,it does not cover completely enough the genre. The particularity of this literary genre and the unfavorable environment are the two main reasons which contribute to it.On the one hand, the works are created by different writers, which leads to their different styles. The researchers have therefore difficulties in reaching a common understanding. On the other hand, the ideology and preference of critic are considered to be the factors that hindered its further introduction to China for a long time.In the third chapter,we discuss the epistemological, literary and mental values of fantastic literature, and therefore its prospect in China.Literally speaking, fantastic literature has its own innovation in theme and narrative mode, its modernist side gives it a permanent life;from the epistemological point of view, with the call of the transcendent reality, and the pursue of the possibility of an impossible, the fantastic allows us a transcendence in the way of looking at and expressing this world;emotionally, the genre renews itself in different periods,we can always draw some spiritual comfort out of it.At the end of this discussion,we managed to draw the following conclusions:the French fantastic literature has not been well introduced into our country, and the readers know little about this special genre. The particularity of this literary genre and the unfavorable environment are the two main reasons which contribute to it.However, this doesn't mean that the values of its translation is negligible. On the contrary, its particular values on the literary, epistemological and mental level remain to be discovered.
