A Study Of The Emperor's Restriction On Buddhism In The Tang Dynasty

The Eastern Han Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties was an important stage of Buddhism from weak to strong.In the flourishing development of the Tang Dynasty,the idea of restricting the development of Buddhism has not been interrupted.This paper tries to explore the relationship between emperors,political power and Buddhism by the perspective of the emperor's limitation of Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty.The Dao an once said:"the Lord is not hard to start up".As the supreme ruler of the state power,the emperor has the final decision-making power to deal with the affairs of the state.In order to make the rule longer and more stable,the relationship between political,economic,cultural and other aspects must be weighed.Which is one of the important part of Buddhism,Buddhist exhortation stopping evil,sentient beings such as the role of use,in order to fool of people,but the stable ruling;clergy and the Buddhist temple economy growing serious occupation of national population,land and other social resources,occurrence of conflict with the feudal regime.How the emperor handled the relationship with Buddhism became the top priority,which not only determines whether the regime is stable,but also determines the trend of the development of Buddhism.Review the former imperial attitudes towards Buddhism,the Eastern Han Dynasty to Han monks,the Wei and Jin Dynasties most emperor Buddha worship the northern and Southern Dynasties,Buddhism and Zhou Dynasty of the Northern Wei emperor too is soon to be flower briefly as the broad-leaved epiphyllum,followed by Suiti,Sui Wendi Buddha worship flooded,Buddhism forces comeback.The attempt to destroy Buddhism in a violent way failed.It also indicates that the development of Buddhism has a certain social foundation in China.This provides historical experience for the emperors in the Tang Dynasty to treat Buddhism.With the development of Buddhism during the reign of the forces and the specific objective of political and economic environment,Tang Gaozu,Gao Zong,and Emperor Taizong,and two cases from social status,the scale of the temple,and the number of other aspects of Buddhism to take measures to restrict the development of.These measures,which have some of the same measures,such as the scale of the temple,and limits the number of;there are some different measures,such as the status of Buddhist temples,monks and nuns regulations,looting of property Wu Zong period.This is closely related to the political situation that every emperor faces.Based on the above analysis of the emperors' limitation of Buddhism,we can see that the Tang Dynasty emperors restricted the Buddha's two characteristics:one is related to the development and change of the Buddhist forces,and two is related to the religious beliefs of emperors.At the same time,summarized the influence produced by the emperors of the Tang Dynasty the Buddha,is reflected in the management of the temple economy limit,monks and nuns,also embodied in the development of Buddhism,Buddhism more integration and adapt to social China.
