The new wave movement of French cinema from the late 1950 s to the early 1960 s is another great film change movement after the French avant-garde film movement and the Italian Neo-realism film movement.It encourages new styles,new themes and new production modes,leaving a great spiritual heritage for later generations,which is mainly presented by the aesthetic character of the new wave cinema.In France,at that time,Sartre's existentialism thought prevailed,most filmmakers were more or less affected by this philosophy,so existentialism philosophy and aesthetic thought played a important role in the formation of aesthetic character of new wave cinema.The new wave filmmakers absorbed the nutrients of existentialism,payed more attention to the expression of individual free will,the expression of individual style and characteristics and the subversion of traditional old moral and old values.The thesis will start from the main representatives and works of the new wave film movement,take the Existentialism as the basic point of view,and consider the unique aesthetic character contained in the new wave cinema in the background of existentialism,and find out the formation of these aesthetic qualities and the thoughts of existentialism philosophy and aesthetics,and the different aspects and existence of these aesthetic qualities.The different emphasis of the theory of thought corresponds to the deeper understanding of the aesthetic character of the new wave cinema.The thesis is divided into five parts:firstly,it expounds the purpose and significance of the topic selection,analyzes the current research status at home and abroad,explains the difficulties,innovation and research methods.Secondly,outlines the background and development process of the new wave movement and defines the scope of the new wave film text.Thirdly,explain the views of André Bazin,the film Handbook directors such as Fran?ois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard,as well as the left bank directors Alain Renais and Agnes Varda and find the ideological link between their film ideas and the Existentialism.Fourthly,find out the corresponding relationship between the formation of the aesthetic character of the perspective,structure,content,theme and style of the new wave cinema and the influence of the different emphasis of existentialism.Fifthly,to explore the significance of the aesthetic quality of New Wave cinema for the development of contemporary Chinese cinemas and to explore its influence on Chinese cinemas today.
