The role playing method was first put forward by American sociologist Fannie in the Role-playing for social values.Role playing was originally used as a method of psychological rehabilitation.With the development of society,it has gradually become a kind of teaching mode.Primary school period is an important period for the development of children.The fourth grade is a transitional period from the lower grades to the upper grades and this stage is the key period of cultivating students' learning ability and good conduct.Situational cognition theory and cooperative learning theory provide a favorable theoretical basis for it.From a wide view of primary English education in China,role playing is mostly a formality under the academic pressure.Exploring the application of role playing in primary school English teaching is conducive to improving the teaching design and implementation process of role playing in primary school English teaching.This paper summarizes the domestic and foreign researches on role-playing method and summarizes the positive effects of role playing in primary school English teaching,including stimulating students' learning interest;highlighting the students' main position;cultivating students' communicative awareness;improving students' oral expression ability.Questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview method were used to investigate the English role playing teaching in grade four of S primary school in Yangzhou.Through the rational analysis of the observation results,questionnaire survey and the interview with teachers,this paper expounds the practice of role-playing in English teaching in the fourth grade.At the same time,some problems have been found,including that teachers' understanding of role playing is not comprehensive;the content of role playing is confined to textbooks;the participation of students is uneven;the way of role playing is single;the interaction between teachers and students is inadequate;evaluations lack standards.The author believes that the reasons for the above problems mainly lie in the heavy psychological burden of students,the tendency to traditional English teaching methods and high requirements of role playing.Then this paper puts forward some suggestions:enriching teachers' theoretical knowledge;expanding the content of role playing;paying attention to each student;enriching the form of role playing;increasing the interaction between teachers and students;further improving the evaluation system.
