Sui Dynasty is a dynasty at the turning point of ancient Chinese history. It moved from the turbulent Wei Jin Southern and Southern Dynasties to a brief unification. In terms of ideology and culture, due to the development of Buddhism and Taoism, the development of Confucianism was once weak.Living in such an era background,Wang Tong consciously shouldered the important task of promoting Confucianism and took himself as Confucius' successor. He continued the Six Classics and enlightened them, making indelible contributions to the development of Confucianism.Wang Tong's writings have not been handed down very much.In these writings,Zhong Shuo is the main work reflecting Wang Tong's thought. The book of Zhong Shuo runs through the whole process with the idea of the Tao of zhong. The thought of Tao of zhong has a long history. One of the sources of Wang Tong's thought of the Tao of zhong is the Confucian thought of the Tao of zhong in the Confucian works. At the same time,Wang Tong's thought of the Tao of zhong can not be separated from the inheritance of his family studies.Wang Tong's thought of the middle way implies that he should conform to the laws of nature and make changes. The five constants of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and faith are in harmony with himself,so as to make the politics of the Kingdom harmonious in society.Wang Tong's thought in Zhong Shuo about Tao of zhong can be presented as a new theory of the relationship between heaven and man,the theory of cultivating one's own character, the theory of political construction, the theory of literary and rational writing, and the theory of education.Tao of zhong thought in Wang Tong's Zhong Shuo can used concretely to abandon "the induction between heaven and man" and face up to "the reason" of human beings,To cultivate oneself to achieve one's nature.Build the State with benevolent government.Works and teaching process should reflect the Tao of zhong.Among them, the Enlightenment of etiquette and music centered on benevolence and righteousness is fundamental.Wang Tong's thought is rich in content and has an important impact on later generations. He practiced enlightenment and promoted the formation of He Fen School. The disciples absorbed Wang Tong's thoughts and made contributions to the political and economic development of the early Tang Dynasty.By the Song Dynasty, more and more people studied Wang Tong. Some concepts in Wang Tong's thought had became the theoretical category discussed by New-Confucianists,and some thoughts had enlightened the Confucianism of Song Dynasty, for example centrality and the psychology of pursuing truth.
