Ma Heng's Calligraphy Researc

Ma Heng was the epigaphy archaeologist and calligrapher seal specialist in the period of Republican China.He did well in seal character,official script,cursive regular script script,and his calligraphy was renowned in cultural communities at that time.Ma Heng learened from the traditional calligraphy book,he learened Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi,referred the calligraphy of Yan Zhenqing,Mi Fu,and Zhao Mengfu and so on,integrated the essence of Monument study,finally formed his own calligraphy style.Ma Heng’s calligraphy was clear,elegant and have literati flavour,learned from the calligraphy styles of "Er Wang".He loved calligraphy in his whole life but don’t call himself a calligrapher.Ma Heng was taught by his teacher,Mr.Ye Haowu to learn the Four Books and the Five Classics,palaeography and calligraphy,when he was young.His views and style of calligraphy were many forms of his handwriting including his letters.His writing style was implicit,graceful and dense flavour.He put a high value on learning and the practice of handwriting.In addition,Ma Heng’s academic research involoed calligraphy reflecting his views on calligraphy.Ma Heng had profound knowledge and deep understand about calligraphy and seal cutting.Ma Heng use books as a guide and enjoyed the calligraphy throughout his life.His handwriting played a important role in the modern history of calligraphy.
