This paper takes the vocabulary of the special book "Hegu Chaotian Diary" as a study, describes the polysyllabic words in the book from the synchronic level, and then discusses the evolution and development of polysyllabic words in "Hegu Chaotian Diary" from the diachronic level, which helps us investigate the development of Chinese vocabulary in the Ming Dynasty and the transition process from modern Chinese to modern Chinese. From the aspects of polysyllabic word formation, new word meaning and the development of new word meaning in The Hegu Chaotian Diary, combined with the theoretical knowledge and research methods of contemporary lexicology and Chinese history,we have made a profound study of the special book vocabulary of The Hegu Chaotian Diary. This paper is mainly divided into four chapters. The first chapter mainly discusses the general situation of polysyllabic words in The Hegu Chaotian Diary. We divide the polysyllabic words into two parts:the generation time, the meaning content of the polysyllabic words and the word-formation of the polysyllabic words. From the time of its birth,we follow Mr.Wang Li's division of Chinese history, dividing the polysyllabic words into ancient polysyllabic words, medieval polysyllabic words and modern polysyllabic words. From the aspect of word-formation,we divide the word-formation into grammatical word-formation and phonetic word-formation,and discuss them in detail in turn.In the second chapter,we mainly study the polysyllabic words produced in the Ming Dynasty in The Hegu Chaotian Diary, including the explanation examples of the new meanings of the new words, the generation reasons for the new meanings and the new words and the ways in which the new meanings of the words came into being. We have explored the causes of the emergence of new words and new meanings from three aspects:the emergence of new things, the need for communication and the change of people's perception of objective things. At the same time,we elaborate on the generation of new meanings of new words from three aspects:lexical, grammatical and rhetorical lexical. In the third chapter,we focus on the change and development of the Ming Dynasty polysyllabic words in The Hegu Chaotian Diary, and discuss the reasons for this change. We mainly elaborate from three aspects:first, the new meanings of words still retained in modern Chinese;second, the new meanings of words that have disappeared in modern Chinese;third, the new meanings of words that have changed in modern Chinese. We believe that the evolution of word meaning is an important link in the study of vocabulary history. The vocabulary system is stable, but it is not invariable. The emergence of new meanings of new words is influenced by people's cognition,so it can be followed regularly. In the fourth chapter,we mainly study the lexicography. On the basis of analyzing the meaning of polysyllabic words in The Hegu Chaotian Diary,we consulted the Great Chinese Dictionary. Then we found that some polysyllabic words in the Great Chinese Dictionary were not accurately interpreted, and some high-frequency polysyllabic words were not included in the Great Chinese Dictionary. We retrieved the corpus of Peking University, made statistics and analysis of the corpus, and made a systematic analysis of the disyllabic words in the Chinese Dictionary. These findings can help us improve the Chinese vocabulary system and dictionary compilation, and have profound significance in tracing the origin of modern Chinese vocabulary.
