With the popularity of Chinese,there are more and more Chinese as a second language learners whose mother tongue is English and who can speak English.Although adverbials in Chinese are like"adverbials" in English,they are not same.So learners always make mistakes.Compared with English,Chinese,as a kind of sino-tibetan language family,lacks morphological changes to express grammatical meaning.Therefore,there are many studies on the errors of word order and the formation of adverbials in the study of Chinese adverbials,but there are not many studies on the errors based on the English expression of Chinese adverbials.This paper takes Chinese and English adverbial as the research object,and finds out the similarities and differences through comparative analysis,so as to analyze the problems existing in the process of learning Chinese adverbial for Chinese learners whose mother tongue is English.At the same time,through the synchronic study of adverbials in Chinese and English,we can improve the predictability of teachers who teach Chinese as a foreign language.And predict the mistakes that Chinese learners of English as a mother tongue may make when they acquire Chinese adverbials,and put forward Suggestions for them.This paper is mainly about four important parts:Firstly,compare and analyze the classification and function of adverbials in Chinese and English.According to Liu Yuehua's book,Practical Modern Chinese Grammar,and Bo Bing's book,A New English Grammar,Chinese adverbials could be divided into restrictive Chinese adverbial and descriptive adverbial.And more specifically under the two categories,it could be divided into adverbial of time,adverbial of place and adverbial of degree etc.English adverbials could be divided into adverbial of time,adverbial of place,adverbial of purpose etc.Based on Anthology of Chinese and English Prose,this paper takes Chinese and English adverbial modifiers as the research object,and makes a comparative analysis of the types of adverbial modifiers in the two languages.It is found that there are great differences in the classification of adverbials between Chinese and English,even though adverbials of the same type are different in grammatical formation and syntactic position.Secondly,based on the classification of adverbial in Chinese and English,this paper makes a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences of adverbial expressions in Chinese and English.Based on the classification of adverbials in Chinese,this paper classifies and summarizes the adverbials collected from Anthology of Chinese and English Prose.Through comparative analysis,the paper explores the changes of various adverbial expressions.There are four phenomena in the expression of Chinese adverbials in English:the expression of Chinese adverbials is basically the same as that of English adverbials;Chinese adverbials incorporate other grammatical elements in English expression;Chinese adverbials correspond to other expressions in English expression;Chinese adverbials disappear in English expression.Thirdly,based on the similarities and differences of adverbial expressions in Chinese and English,this paper analyzes the errors of adverbial expressions in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.According to the collation of the corpus of BCC and the corpus of Chinese learners whose native language is English,the adverbial errors are divided into four types:omission of adverbial,wrong order of adverbial,wrong addition of adverbial and misuse of adverbial.On the basis of the comparison between the classification and expression of adverbial in Chinese and English,this paper describes and analyzes the errors.Fourthly,the author puts forward some Suggestions on adverbial teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.Based on the analysis of adverbial errors and the comparison of adverbial classification and expression between Chinese and English,this paper discusses effective teaching methods for Chinese learners whose mother tongue is English.Learners should try to overcome the negative transfer of mother tongue and avoid the interference of learning strategies.Teachers should make clear the key and difficult points of adverbial teaching,optimize teaching methods and create a good language environment for learners.The teaching material design must pay attention to the adverbial grammar point design and the exercise arrangement after class.
