Modal complement,a form of complement with complicated and diverse usage in Chinese,has always been an obstacle in teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language.For learners whose native language is Japanese,it is difficult to acquire complements and prone to make mistakes because there is no complete equivalent grammatical form in Japanese.This study adopts survey and comparative analysis to discuss errors in using Chinese model complement,as well as why this is the case.It also proposes teaching strategies accordingly.This thesis has seven chapters:Chapter 1:Introduction.I will introduce the objectives,background,theoretical framework,methodology,and literature review.Chapter 2:A brief introduction of modal complement,which includes analysis of the semantic and pragmatic structure,as well as the form of modal in Japanese.Chapter 3:Survey of errors occurred in the use of Chinese modal complement among learners whose native language are Japanese.I use survey and comparative analysis to provide a statistical account of errors in modal complement made by Japanese-nati ves.Chapter 4:I will analyze types and causes of errors that Japanese-natives tend to make in using Chinese modal complement.Chapter 5:In light of the analysis,I will propose teaching strategies accordingly.Chapter 6:Conclusion and review of the limit of this study.
