From the ancient calligraphy theory works,we known that the most common way of criticism was "nearly taken from the body, far from the objects".Cloud, mountain, insect, and fish were the reference object of calligraphy criticism. As one of the three powers,"human" was common in ancient calligraphy theory works, including the human body structure, appearance, expression and so on as the basis of criticism, which could be called "the metaphor of life".This paper focused on the theory of calligraphy in the Tang Dynasty, and made a intensive study on the way of calligraphy criticism with "metaphor of life".By combing the calligraphy literature related to this in the Tang Dynasty, and combining the external characteristics and internal spirit of human body, this paper sumed up the types of "metaphor of life" in calligraphy criticism from two aspects of "flesh and blood","emotion and spirit".On this foundation,it further explained the theoretical basis behind "the metaphor of life",and probed into its causes from "the unity of heaven and man" and "taking images to compare calligraphy".Then,it summarized "the metaphor of life in calligraphy criticism from the perspective of human connotation, and concluded that this way of speaking reflected the artistic style and features of "breath of life" and "like nature itself" in calligraphy art. Finally,it discussed the theoretical value of "metaphor of life".
