In “Logical investigations”,Husserl completely abandoned the early psychological position, and launched a severe criticism on it.In his opinion, the meaning of language expression is objective and independent, just like the law of logic, which will not change with people's mental experience. On this basis,Husserl puts forward “ideal meaning”,which is neither mental experience nor platonic ideal, and takes it as the essence of language. This new theory presented him with new problems, such as how can ideal meaning be thought, how can ideal meaning related to mental activities, and so on.This paper tries to introduce the answer of Husserl, and points out the flaw in his theory. In the first chapter,I will clarify the background of Husserl's discussion of meaning. It mainly consists of three parts: anti-psychologism,essential intuition and reflective orientation.Grasping these basic positions could help us get a clear understanding about the meaning theory. The second chapter focus on the meaning problem from the intentional behavior side.In Husserl's opinion, the key of language is understanding activity, which he calls “intentional behavior”.Through this behavior, meaning can be endowed to words.Another intentional behavior named “enrichment behavior”,which means intuitive by perception or imagination.I will sort out the relation between two intentional behaviors and their connection with ideal meaning in this chapter. The following chapter discuss the ideal meaning straightly.I will discuss the connection of meaning and intentional behavior, the relationship between meaning and reference, and the pure grammar rules. Here,we run into the problem of opportunistic expressions because the meaning of these expressions completely depends on context.Does this shake Husserl's argument about the objectivity of meaning? At last,we will begin with some difficulties of meaning theory. In later works,Husserl tries to deal them with his new theory. Then I will introduce Derrida's criticism of Husserl's meaning theory, and evaluate whether it is correct and hit the mark.
