China is the most successful country in the world in dealing with ethnic relations and ethnic issues.Ethnic identification provides conditions for the Chinese government to implement policies such as national unity, ethnic equality, and ethnic regional autonomy. The successful experience of Chinese ethnic identification is an example for other countries in the world to learn from. The Sino-Vietnamese friendship has a long History, there are 27 out of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam having the same origins with those in China, they are cross-border ethnicities. The Ethnic identification in Vietnam has draws on many successful experiences in China and has its own characteristics. The Ethnic identification work in Vietnam is mainly conducted by the government's subordinate Committee of Ethnic Minority Affairs. The Committee of Ethnic Minority Affairs held various seminars throughout the country to discuss and determine ethnic groups one by one.In 1979,the ethnological scholarship established a list of Vietnamese ethnic compositions on this basis. In the 1970s,after more than 20 years of anti-US war,Vietnam's national finances were mainly restored after the war,and the country did not record relevant theories and achievements in the field of ethnic identification. Therefore,it is difficult to understand the relevant basis and the final result of ethnic identification in Vietnam. From this point of view, the author chooses "Vietnamese Ethnic identification and Comparison that with in China" as the theme of the thesis. This paper consists of five chapters, and the specific contents are as follows:Chapter One,mainly outlines the basic theories of ethnic identification.Firstly, the author discussed the understanding of Marx,Engels, and Lenin's ethnic viewpoints by the Vietnamese academia as the basis of Vietnamese ethnic identity theory. In addition,Vietnamese ethnologists also refer to the Western academic circle's basic view on the concept of "ethnicity" to supplement the basic theory of Vietnamese ethnic identification. Moreover, the Vietnamese scholars have further discussed the concept of "nation" and "ethnic group",in order to make a clear distinction between two concepts. This is one of the basic strategic ideas of the ethnic identification in Vietnam.Chapter Two,the discussion regarding the basis of Vietnam's ethnic identification. The ethnic identification in Vietnam cannot be separated from the history of Vietnamese, therefor;studying the history of ethnic groups is the second thought for identifying ethnic groups in ethnology studies. The Vietnamese dynasties throughout the history have paid a lot of attention to ethnic issues. Each dynasty had its own policies for managing ethnic affairs, there have been gentle measures but there also have suppression policies used. The policies on ethnic affairs in the ancient times in Vietnam have had both advantages and disadvantages, leaving many lessons for later generations in dealing with ethnic affairs.Chapter Three, this chapter mainly discusses the historical background, practice basis, and identification process that the Vietnamese government and ethnological scholars have determined in Vietnam.Chapter Four, this chapter discusses the historical background of Chinese ethnic identification and believes that the identification of the vast majority of ethnic minorities in China before 1949 was not recognized.Ethnic minorities share their Chinese national identity and hope to be recognized. There were two major issues solved in the identification of Chinese ethnic minorities,as result of that,"there were 400 ethnic minority groups reported in the first census identifying and who are Han and who are ethnic minorities?" "Who are a single ethnic minority group?" "Who are just sub-groups?"Chapter Five mainly discuss about the comparison between ethnic identification in Vietnam and China.China and Vietnam are neighboring countries. Two countries have same political system and similar development process. In this chapter, author attempts to find out the similarities and the differences between the ethnic identification processes of the two countries from the points of view regarding the backgrounds, basics, and the processes of their own through the comparative study of the two. After analyzing the similarities and the differences of the two ethnic identification processes, eventually proposes a conclusion of the whole thesis.
