South Asia is one of the areas with the most fragile security situation, where the relationship between India and Pakistan, the two major powers,is the barometer to regional security situation.India and Pakistan have been in the nuclear arm race since 1947 and in 1998,India and Pakistan respectively delivered nuclear tests, undermining international nonproliferation system and complicating the security situation in South Asia. However,India and Pakistan chose to retrain from the escalation in Kargil Crisis in 1999,2001-2002 Indo-Pak Standoff and 2008 Mumbai Crisis ever since 1998 tests. This thesis believes that the United States' involvement in the Indo-Pak crises as the third party, can help settle the crises beside the actual nuclear threats. The fact that neither India nor Pakistan was willing to deteriorate the situation while the lack of communication channel is the context of the U.S.'s involvement, the U.S.interests in South Asia, its multiple bargaining options and close partnership with both Indian and Pakistan as a pivot state are subjective and material driving force.Starting with the theory of trilateral interaction plus crisis management, the thesis picks up the case of 2001-2002 Indo-Pak standoff and 2008 Mumbai crisis,in which the United States eased the tension between India and Pakistan, helped build common ground through communication-facilitation strategies, procedural strategies, directive strategies, and finally changed their mutual expectation and perception from hostility to cooperation, and those strategies took different forms respectively in the two cases, but the effect of the U.S.intervention is influenced by the will of the U.S.intervention,the domestic politics and public opinions in the India and PakistanIn the future, under the circumstance of the U.S.'s strategic shift, the contest for supremacy between China and the U.S.,the acceptability of the U.S.'s involvement in South Asia, the willingness and ability will face uncertainty.
