The community college is a new type of higher education which was created by the United States of America.Its creation has made an important contribution to the development of the higher education in the world.Its creation also brought profound influence to the higher education of America for it made the arrangement of different levels and different types of colleges more reasonable.We have to mention California community college system when we talk about the community colleges in the United States.As early as in the 1970s,the California community college system was the largest in the United States.Now there are 114 community colleges in California distributed in 72 community college districts.And more than 2 million students are enrolled by California community colleges every year,accounting for one fifth of the total number of the community college students in the United States.This research selects the history of California community colleges after the Second World War as the research object and adopts the methods of historical research;literature analysis to analyze the history of California community colleges after the Second World War and?the features of its development.This paper is divided into following parts:The introduction mainly introduces the reasons and significance of selecting the topic,the research status of the subject at home and abroad,the research methods adopted in this study and the value of the research.The first chapter mainly introduces the history of California junior colleges Golden Development Period from 1945 to 1969.During this period the number of California junior colleges surged from 1945 to 1950 and the scale of California community colleges was expanding quickly from 1950 to 1960.You can also know California junior colleges how to develop under the Master Plan of California Higher Education in 1960s.So that you will understand why California is the leader in American 2-year colleges.The second chapter mainly elaborate the history of California community colleges in the 1970s and 1980s.California was one of the seven states which had mature community college systems in the early 1970s.In the 1970s,community college became the new name of the public 2-year colleges in California and the career education became one of the main educational functions of the California community colleges.At the same time the colleges played an important role in compensation education and community education.However there were some problems in the process of its development,like the traditional transfer education began to decline and the community colleges met financial difficulties.On the student structure the minority group students were more and more,the average age of the students got bigger and more part-time students were enrolled.The third chapter mainly introduces the development of California community colleges since the 1990s.The enrollment is increasing,the transfer education gets a little better but unstable,the career education is the first education function of the California community colleges.By reading the conclusion,you can learn something about Chinese community colleges and how we can develop our community colleges with Chinese characteristics by learning the experience of California community colleges.
