Primary as well as secondary school teachers' career development is important to a nation's future.Under the new journey and new mission,the construction of teacher team has been continuously strengthened.Teachers in primary and secondary schools are facing higher criteria when talking about professional quality and comprehensive quality.The theory of adaptability based on Career Construction Theory(CCT),emphasizes that individual's career involves a dynamic process to get balanced through the interaction between the person and the environment.The study on fundamental conditions and mechanism of teacher's career adaptability is significant to promote theirs career management as well as the whole nation's education development.The study started from the career adaptability of teachers,analysis the relationship between career adaptability and calling,work engagement and burnout.The first part of the study investigated 150 primary and secondary school teachers and revised the Engaged Teacher Scale(ETS).The revised Chinese version of ETS contains 16 items and divides into four dimensions,which are emotional engagement,cognitive engagement,social engagement: students,and social engagement: colleagues.Likert five-level scoring method was adopted.The scale and its different dimensions' coefficient ? are 0.964,0.967,0.909,0.946 and 0.920.CFA show that the fitting index of the four-factor model is better than other models.The second part of the study investigated 465 primary and secondary teachers,studied fundamental conditions of the group and the relationship between career adaptability,calling,work engagement as well as burnout.The results showed that :(1)The overall level of these investigated teachers' career adaptability were above average(>3),while calling and work engagement are in high level overall(>4),and burnout was slightly lower than average(<4).(2)There are significant differences in variables including teaching age,tenure,etc.Difference in gender,teaching stage,school location,etc doesn't exists.(3)Career Adaptability,Calling,Work engagement are significantly positively correlated with each other,while Burnout is significantly negatively correlated with other variables.(4)Calling and Career Adaptability has a significant positive effect on Work Engagement,and a negative effect on Burnout,also Calling predicts Adaptability positively.(5)There's part mediator effect of Career Adaptability in the relationship between Calling and Work engagement,and between Calling and Burnout.The conclusions are as follows:(1)Reliability and validity of the revised Engaged Teacher Scale(ETS)'s are highly enough to vualuate Chinese teachers' Work Engagement properly.(2)Career Adaptability,Calling,Work Engagement Burnout of primary and secondary school teachers are affected by demographic/histological variables including teaching stage,tenure,bianzhi and school property.(3)There's a significant pairwise correlation among the four variables.(4)Career Adaptability is partly mediated the relation between Calling and Work Engagement,as well as the relation between Calling and Burnout.Combined with the results and conclusions,several revelation has been concluded.(1)Teachers should establish proper view toward career and clarify career tasks of different stage and enhance their adaptability consciously.(2)Encouraging teachers to join to manage the school and make use of school resources as far as possible so they can develop themselves.(3)Optimizing the training,management and evaluation mechanism for teachers' professional development and career development,and form a whole-staff,comprehensive and whole-process support system.
