Since the reform and opening up,China’s urbanization has developed rapidly, but development has also been accompanied by a series of problems.Among them, the contradiction between unbalanced development of urbanization and environmental pollution has gradually become an important factor restricting the sustained growth of China’s economy.Urban sprawl is a typical case of unbalanced development of urbanization. The Yangtze River Economic Belt,as an important pole of China’s economic growth, plays an important role in the national development strategy.Today it is also facing the development of unbalanced urban development and serious environmental pollution.problem.Therefore,studying the effect of urban sprawl in the Yangtze River Economic Belt on the environment will have implications for promoting the coordinated development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and optimizing the environment on both sides of the Yangtze River. It also has certain reference value for promoting the sustained growth of the national economy.Firstly, the article first reviewed the correlation between urban sprawls and environmental pollution both at home and abroad.Based on the theory of urban sprawls and environmental pollution,a theoretical model was constructed to analyze the impact of urban sprawls on environmental pollution.Secondly, taking the index data of 104 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt for the period of 2003-2015 as samples, the urban sprawls and environmental pollution index were calculated, and the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of urban sprawls and environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Economic Belt were explored.finally, based on the nighttime light data static panel model, dynamic panel model and spatial Dubin model were used to study the impact of urban sprawls on the environment. The characteristics of spatio-temporal evolution of urban sprawls and environmental pollution indicate that:(1)The urbanization of the Yangtze River Economic Belt has experienced rapid development, but the development has been uneven and the urban sprawls has been continuously severed. The urban sprawls in the central region of the Yangtze River Economic Belt is the most serious, followed by the downstream and the lowest in the upper reaches.(2)The overall environmental pollution index of the Yangtze River Economic Zone is relatively high, but the evolution trend is stable. The environmental pollution in the Three Touring Regions has been intensified, but the number of highly polluted areas has decreased, and the pollution index has been extremely low.(3)Spatially,environmental pollution in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is relatively weak, but the correlation is increasing year by year.Positive agglomeration effects cities are mainly distributed in the middle and lower reaches of the region, and negative agglomeration effects cities are mainly distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the region. The results of metrological tests show that(1)urban sprawls in the Yangtze River Economic Belt has a negative impact on the environmental pollution index, and urban sprawls is conducive to slowing down environmental pollution.(2)Spatially,the direct effect of urban sprawls on the pollution index is negative, the indirect effect is positive, and the direct effect is greater than the indirect effect, indicating that environmental pollution is affected by the sprawls of local cities more than urban sprawls in neighboring regions. The total effect is a negative effect.(3)the control variables,in the whole Yangtze River Economic Belt, industrial transfer and the level of government systems, the level of urban openness, and the increase of urbanization level will aggravate environmental pollution, and the growth of residents’ income will slow environmental pollution.Based on the conclusions reached, the article proposes to optimize the ecological environment of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from the aspects of urban construction, industrial structure, system construction, urbanization quality, open development, and talent cultivation.
