The purpose of this study is to test the predictive effect of individual sleep quality on its voice behavior, the mediating effect of individual voice efficacy on sleep quality and voice behavior, and the moderating effect of individual pro-social motivation on sleep quality and voice efficacy.Combining with the Social Cognition Theory and the Ego Depletion Theory,we try to integrate the sleep deprivation literature into the voice research and take a within-person approach to extend theory predicting employees' episodic voice. We conducted a 10-day log survey of 130 employees. The study found that the individual sleep quality in the previous night has a significant positive impact on the voice behavior of the next day,and the relationship between the quality of sleep and the episodic voice behavior is mediated by individual state voice efficacy. At the same time, the pro-social motivation moderates the relationship between sleep quality and voice efficacy, which is to say that the stronger the pro-social motivation, the stronger the positive relationship between sleep quality and voice efficacy. Our research provides some theoretical contributions to the existing literature.First of all,we extend the voice literature by unraveling the within-person process of voice and enriching the trigger mechanism of individual state voice behavior, highlighting the role of physiological resources in motivating voice behavior.Secondly,we contribute to the voice research by showing that pro-social motivation can not only trigger voice directly as found in prior studies, but also can benefit the within-person determining process of voice. In other words,to obtain high levels of state voice efficacy, individuals not only need strong physiological resources, but also should have high motivations to benefit the organization. Finally,we extend the sleep deprivation literature by showing that when and why good sleep can ignite employees' pro-social fire(i.e.,voice)in the organizational context.
