Modeling The Impacts Of Ride-souorcing Platforms On Urban Transportation Market

With the popularity of smart phones,the fast development of wireless communication and GPS positioning technologies,ride-sourcing platforms,e.g.,Didi and Uber,emerge and bring about significant change to the urban transportation market.Whether or not private vehicles should be allowed to provide transport service on the ride-sourcing platform becomes a hot debate.While many peo.ple enjoy the convenience of ride-sourcing service,the others criticize that allowing private vehicles to provide ride-sourcing service leads to severer traffic cong.estion.In this paper,we develop a mathematical model to investigate travelers'mode choices after the emergence of a ride-sourcing platform which allows private car drivers to provide pass.enger-transport service.The complex interactions betyween travelers,mode choices and the attractiveness of ride-sourcing service are considered:the waiting time and income level determine the attractiveness of a ride-sourcing platform to riders and drive:rs respectively,and the number of passengers and drivers in,turn influences the passengers' waiting time and drivers' income from providing ride-sourcing service,Based on the model,a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the possible positive and negative impacts on urban traffic condition.We analyze the sensitivity of the factors affecting Gitizens' trip mode choice.This paper can be used as the reference for evaluating the influence of ride-sourcing according to the urban characters.
