With the gradual optimization of the combination of productivity development and factors of production, urban agglomerations have emerged as an advanced form of industrialization and urbanization. The development of urban agglomerations marks the rapid development of China's economy and the continuous improvement of modernization levels, plays an important role in the balanced development of regional economies. At present,China's economy is developing rapidly as a whole, but the balanced development of the regional economy has not been achieved. The size of the economic development gap between the regions is inconsistent. The uneven development trend brought by the regional gap will affect social stability and economic development.Studying the economic gap within the region based on the level of the city cluster is helpful to understand the effect of the development of the city cluster on the balanced development of the regional economy. This article takes the Yangtze River Economic Belt as a research object, and uses SYSGMM to study the relationship between the degree of urban agglomeration and the economic gap within the city group.First, the related concepts of urban agglomerations and regional economic disparities are analyzed and explained, and the internal mechanism of their roles is explained.Secondly, based on the actual GDP values of 76 cities under the jurisdiction of each urban agglomeration in 2016 and 2018,a detailed analysis of the economic imbalances of the urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt was performed using charts.Third, based on the panel data of each city in the urban agglomeration from 2003 to 2018,the urban agglomeration index, standard deviation index, coefficient of variation, and Theil index method are used to measure the degree of urban agglomeration, the absolute economic gap of the urban agglomeration, and the relative economy gap of the urban agglomeration, the economic gap contribution within the urban agglomeration. The study found that the average level of urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta is the highest, and the average level of urban agglomeration in Poyang Lake is the lowest. The main reason for the economic gap is the economic gap within the urban agglomeration.Finally,SYS-GMM was used to estimate the model. The study found that the characteristic relationship between the urban agglomeration degree and the economic gap within the urban agglomeration was an inverted "U" curve. The results were relatively stable, and the inflection point of the urban agglomeration degree was approximately 0.9705.The sample data of the urban agglomeration degree of the urban agglomeration in 2018 shows that only the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, the Changzhutan urban agglomeration, and the central Yunnan urban agglomeration have crossed the inflection point, are to the right of the inflection point, and are at the stage of reducing the economic gap within the agglomeration. The central Guizhou urban agglomeration is about to cross the inflection point, and the remaining urban agglomerations are at a stage of expanding the economic gap within the urban agglomeration.Based on the above analysis, this article proposes proposals to reduce the economic gap within urban agglomerations, mainly including: increasing the intensity and scope of radiation in large cities, strengthening the role of intergovernmental interventions in cities, and focusing on the complementarity of industrial structures between cities.
