Abstract/Summary:
This meta-analytical synthesis of studies focused on the relationship between four dimensions of the school's physical environment (building condition, building age, artificial lighting, and natural lighting) and their relationship with student learning and student behavior. The research surrounding the effects of these four independent variables have on the two dependent variables is both the source of debate and potential benefit for students and schools. The researcher utilized related published and unpublished quantitative studies on kindergarten through 12th grade as the basis for the meta-analysis. Specific independent variables, independent variable measurement tools, dependent variables, dependent variable measurement tools, sample descriptions, type of publications, funding information, locations of the research, dates of the research, statistical procedures used, and general findings were identified and categorized. The findings will provide an analytical tool that will inform future research and research replication efforts. In addition, it may be used to inform architects and school and government leaders by offering the most recent compiled findings on how the physical environment of schools is associated with students' learning and behavior.
