Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this research is to describe and predict variations in high school seniors' expectations about making three significant life-course transitions. These are expectations about getting married, having children, and gaining economic independence from their parents. Research in recent years has suggested that adolescence is becoming elongated and there are variations in how adolescents make these transitions. This study researched variations in adolescents' expectations about making these transitions, specifically across sex, race, geographic location, socioeconomic status as described by parent(s) educational achievement, and substance use. Using data from the 2007 wave of the Monitoring the Future (MTF) study, results indicated that there is some variation in these transitions. Models had little explanation across the studied variations, indicating that much of the variation in time horizons to adulthood extend beyond sex, race, geographic location, socioeconomic status as described by parent(s) educational achievement, and substance use.;Keywords: Time horizon, adolescence, adulthood, marriage, parenthood, independence...
